PETRA - First Blue Peter Pet

Petra was the first Pet to appear on the popular Childrens TV show Blue Peter. The producers said Petra was "a surrogate pet" for all the children viewers who were unable to keep a pet. She was named Petra by the children viewers in a competition. Petra made her TV debut in 1962. In 1965 she gave birth to 8 puppies. All were found special homes, such as, in children homes, as working farmdogs, a regimental mascot and one, Patch, followed in his Mothers footsteps on the TV show. After 15 years on the show Petra became ill in 1977 and was retired. Her death in July made the headlines, and a statue of her, by William Timyn, is in the Blue Peter Garden.
