Socks and Bill Clinton
Socks was known as the First Cat, being the principal pet of the President and his family.
Socks came from Little Rock, Arkansas and was adopted by the Clintons in 1991 when he jumped into the arms of Chelsea Clinton as she left a piano lesson. When the Clintons moved to The White House, Socks went with them and became famous visiting Schools and hospitals. At the height of his fame he received 75,000 letters and parcels weekly. In 1997 the Clintons got a dog called Buddy who Socks despised. Many joked Socks had been 'voted out of office'. When the Clintons left The White House in 2001, Socks went to live with Betty Currie, Bill Clinton's secretary. Socks made a rare appearance in 2004 but soon old age and cancer caught up with him. Socks was put down on the 20th February 2009 after suffering cancer of the jaw.
