FLIPPER - The dolphin
Flipper the dolphin, who starred in the original movie with Chuck Connors and then the subsequent tv series, was actually a female dolphin called Mitzi. Mitzi could never master the tail walking on water so she had a stunt double, a male dolphin called Mr Gipper who performed that. However, knocking guns out of baddies hands and alerting folk to danger was left to Mitzi as she was so tame and amiable she did everything else. Mitzi eventually suffered a heart attack and was buried at US1 Grassy Key in the heart of the Florida Keys. There is now a dolphin centre there and a 30 foot concrete dolphin statue was erected to her.
