Dash and Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria had a much loved King Charles Spaniel, gifted to her in 1833 by Sir John Conroy. It was a gift of appeasement from a man she loathed, but it didn't work! She called the dog Dash and he was her faithful companion throughout girlhood and her early reign. Dash was reputed to have played cupid as when she met Albert in 1836, his behaviour towards Dash, won her approval. She even wrote in her diary how Albert "played with and fussed over Dash" Shortly after, Victoria proposed marriage to Albert. When Dash died in 1840 Victoria buried him herself in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
